69 years ago today, Prinz Eugen and Nagato (among others) were subjected to an underwater nuclear explosion: Test Baker, part of "Operation Crossroads," the first atomic tests carried out against shipping. The site of the testing, Bikini Atoll, gave its name to the two-piece swimsuit worn--to explosive effect--by people all over the world.

At least they are able to rest in peace beneath the waves, since the ship's that weren't to heavily irradiated were either used for target practice, or were ripped to pieces and sold as scrap metal.
